The Early Days Of Jesse Poore (1770-1860) - Documented Research

Last Update: July 23, 2025

This documented research traces the elusive early life of Jesse Poore (1770-1860), born around 1770 in North Carolina and died in Claiborne County, Tennessee.

Due to significant record destruction during various conflicts in North Carolina, firmly documenting Jesse's initial years has been challenging.

However, through decades of dedicated research, including DNA analysis and the meticulous correlation of fragmented data, records, names, and locations, we have reconstructed his formative experiences in North Carolina and Tennessee.

A key discovery is Jesse's use of both "Poore" and "Powers" as surnames, evidenced by transactions such as purchasing land as Jesse Powers and later selling it as Jesse Poor.

This research sheds new light on previously unknown connections to Jesse's early life in North Carolina.

Introduction

Jesse Poore was born in North Carolina around 1770. A lot of records were destroyed in various wars and battles in North Carolina which makes it very hard to firmly track Jesse’s early life. But, with decades of research, DNA backed tracking as well as connecting data, records, names, locations etc. we were able to piece together Jesse’s early days in North Carolina & Tennessee.

Something to keep in mind, Jesse Poore also used the name Jesse Powers. Example, he bought land as Jesse Powers then later sold the same land as Jesse Poor.

This research is provided to show connections from parts of Jesse’s early life in North Carolina that were unknown until recently.

To read in more detail about Jesse’s life in Tennessee, please read Being Poore in America Vol. 2 which can be found online (Free) at this link.

High-Level DNA Evidence

In this research, DNA has played a large role in determining which family line Jesse Poore belongs to. We have already proven an extremely high direct Y-DNA (Male line) connection from Jesse Poore’s line to Jeremiah Poer’s (1754-1850) line in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Since DNA does not lie, the connection Jesse Poore has to the line of Jeremiah Poer is a fact. Here is a very quick overview of the BIG Y-DNA results.

Y-DNA sources from the following:

* Keven Poore - Direct descendant of Jeremiah Poer (1754-1850)
* Keith Dwayne Wilcox - Direct descendant of Jesse Poore (1770-1860)
* Lee Poore - Direct descendant of Jesse Poore (1770-1860)
* Albert G. Poore - Direct descendant of Jesse Poore (1770-1860)

Only 5 do not match out of 686 Big Y STRs.
681 Big Y STRs out of 686 matches between Keith Dwayne Wilcox and Keven Poore.

Only 5 do not match out of 686 Big Y STRs.
645 Big Y STRs out of 650 matches between Albert G. Poore and Keven Poore.

Only 3 do not match out of 686 Big Y STRs.
653 Big Y STRs out of 656 matches between Lee Poore and Keven Poore.

The full detailed DNA research is included further in this document and on our website PooreFamilyHistory.com

Keep this DNA connection to Jeremiah Poer in mind while reading this research.

Strong Evidence Based Theory

Based on information we have researched; Jesse Poore’s parents could have been David Poor (Possible brother to Jeremiah Poer & Edward Poer Jr.) and Priscilla Poor who lived in North Carolina. Jesse Poore could have married Ann Hester (Daughter of Robert Hester, sister in-law of Jeremiah Poer).

Naming conventions for Jesse’s children help show this connection along with the census, probate, court, tax, land deed information and documentation included in this research.
This theory seems very possible based on the strong evidence of how closely (location) these families were to one another in different counties over a decade and probably longer.

Jeremiah Poer married Elizabeth Hester (Robert Hester’s daughter, sister of Ann Hester) in 1790 in Guilford County, North Carolina.

With the extremely high Y-DNA match to the Jeremiah Poer 1754-1850 line, we have always believed these two options were possible.

Option 1:
Jeremiah Poer 1754-1850 is the father of Jesse Poore 1770-1860.

Option 2:
Unknown Brother*, James Poer 1755-1811 (Jeremiah’s brother) or Edward Poer 1735-1834 (Father of Jeremiah, James) is the father of Jesse Poore 1770-1860.

*In this case, David Poor (Wife: Priscilla Poor) would be the unknown brother.

Naming Conventions of the Time

Many Scotts/English families of the time followed the custom of naming their children after the grandparents in the following manner.

* First born son named for the paternal grandfather.
* Second born son named for the maternal grandfather.
* Third born son named for the father.
* First born daughter named for the paternal grandmother.
* Second born daughter named for the maternal grandmother.
* Third born daughter named for the mother.

Let’s assume Jesse Poore (1770-1860) married Ann Hester (1765)

Ann Hester’s parents:
* Robert Hester (1730s-1802)
* Elizabeth Nancy Norman (1730s-1767)

Let’s assume Jesse Poore’s (1770-1860) parents are those listed below.

Jesse Poore’s assumed parents:
* David Poor
* Priscilla Poor

Names of Jesse’s known children from his first marriage:

First born son named for the paternal grandfather
David (Grandfather’s name is David Poor)

Second born son named for the maternal grandfather
Robert (Grandfather’s name is Robert Hester)

Third born son named for the father
William Robert Poore (Father’s name is Jesse Poore. William or Robert could be
his first name and Jesse could possibly be his middle name.)

First born daughter named for the paternal grandmother
Priscilla (Grandmother’s name is Priscilla Poor) Priscilla is shown to be Jesse’s first daughter using the information found further in this research document.

Second born daughter named for the maternal grandmother
Nancy Ann Poor (Grandmother’s name is Elizabeth Nancy Norman)

Four out of the five naming conventions in this case correctly match the family members listed. The only one that didn’t match exactly was for Jesse’s third son which could be due to Jesse using a middle name.

There are listings showing Ann Hester’s death happening in 1802, but nothing documented with records that we have seen. She was named in her father’s will in October of 1802.

Jesse Poore’s Daughter: Priscilla Poor

Priscilla Poor was born in North Carolina around 1800 while Jesse was married to his first wife. She married William Pence and lived in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Priscilla Poor wasn’t known to be a daughter of Jesse until it was confirmed by this research.

1850 | LAND SCHEDULE | Sullivan County, TN
INVOLVING: William Pence, William Poore

On an 1850 land schedule in Sullivan County, TN, William Pence is listed on the same page as William Poor. This is more than likely Jesse Poore's (1770-1860) son William Robert Poore Sr. (1804-1880), he is also Priscilla’s brother.

Source:

1850 | CENSUS | Sullivan County, TN
INVOLVING: William Poore, Nancy Poore

William Robert Poore Sr. had a daughter named Nancy and on the 1850 census for Sullivan County, Tennessee, she is listed as living with her parents and siblings including her brother William R Poore Jr.

Source:

1860 | CENSUS | Sullivan County, TN
INVOLVING: William Pence, Priscilla Poore, Nancy Poore

In 1860 William Pence and his Wife Priscilla Pence (Poore) are listed as living with Nancy Poore.

Source:

1865 | DEATH | Sullivan County, TN
William Pence, the husband of Priscilla died on June 21st,1865 in Sullivan County, Tennessee.

1870 | CENSUS | Sullivan County, TN
INVOLVING: William R. Poore, Priscilla Poore

In 1870 Priscilla Poor (aged 70) is listed as living with William R. Poore (Jesse Poore's grandson).

The 1870 census lists someone named Rigl Poor at 41 years old. I believe this is William R. Poore Jr. (Jesse's grandson). If you look at the actual census, his name is listed as Rigs. If you compare the wife and children listed to the Children of William Robert Poore Jr. the names match.

It appears that Priscilla Pence (Poore) moved in with her nephew William Robert Poore Jr. after her husband died in 1865.

Source:

If you list Priscilla Poore in with the births of Jesse Poore's children from his first marriage, they are all nearly 3 years apart.

David Poore 1794–
Robert Poore 1797–1850
Priscilla Poore 1800–After 1870
William Robert Poore 1804–1880
Nancy Ann Poor 1807–1850
John Poore 1810–1879

David’s name looks like David Hood but it's with the other "P" names. If you look at the tail on the lowercase “r” in the name Purdom below David’s listing, you’ll notice the trailing tail on the lowercase “r”. When you look at David’s listing, the last name appears to be “Hood”, but the “D” looks bolder than the other letters and if you look closely, you will see the same tail the lowercase “r” had below. It seems to have been corrected from a “d” to an “r” but the ink covers it.

David Poor’s name is confirmed in the 1799 tax list for Stokes County, NC as he is listed next to the same Purdom family members.

Jesse’s Quaker Connections

Jesse Poore 1770-1860 lived in Quaker country while in North Carolina, had close associates that were Quakers and even his second wife was from a Quaker family.

Jeremiah Poer 1754-1850 (Strong Y-DNA connection to Jesse) appeared on the 1790 census in Guilford County, NC. He more than likely was there much earlier than 1790 but many documents were destroyed in fires from various battles. Jeremiah is the brother of Edward Poer Jr and possibly the uncle to Jesse Poore 1770-1860 through Jeremiah’s possible brother David Poore.

"A midweek meeting was set up in 1753, and a preparative meeting established in 1758. The Burial Grounds records, held by Deep River record the first burial as 1800, while the first recorded death in the birth and death records was in 1761."

Jeremiah Poer & Elizabeth Hester

Jeremiah "Jerry" Poer II 1802–1837 (Jeremiah & Elizabeth's Son)
He and his wife are listed as the parents of Franklin Poer in a monthly Quaker meeting in Indiana.

Source:

Edward Lucius Poer 1794–1880 (Jeremiah & Elizabeth's Son)

Edward Lucius Poer married Sarah Morris in Sullivan County, TN. This is where Jesse Poore (1770-1860) lived with his wife Mary Morris. Sarah and Mary Morris were sisters and came from a Quaker family in North Carolina. Their father Reuben Morris and grandfather Thomas Hatton Morris lived near Jeremiah and his brother Edward Poer jr.

Edward Lucius Poer and his wife lived in Indiana and Illinois after they were married.

Edward Poer Jr. & Sarah Thompson

Deep River where Edward Poer Jr. had around 400 acres of land is where the Deep River Meeting House (Quakers) and Friends Burial Ground are in the western part of Guilford County, about 12 miles from Greensboro.

Sarah Thompson Poer (Edward Poer Jr’s wife)

Sarah placed her belongings in a one-horse wagon after Edward died in North Carolina and the family left for Henry County, Indiana in 1832. Sarah lived out her later years in Shelby County, IN in the home of her grandson Patrick Moore.  This is based on the story below about when she moved but there are also census records.

She is buried in a Quaker Cemetery, Blue River Chapel Cemetery.

Living to the age of 94 and being buried in a quaker cemetery more than likely means she was a quaker her entire life. Edward Poer Jr. was more than likely a quaker or lived the life after he married Sarah. Sarah Thompson's parents were also Quakers.

Absalom Poer 1804-1879 (Edward & Sarah's Son)

Buried in Quaker cemetery and listed in Quaker meeting rolls.

More of Jesse's Quaker ties:

As mentioned, Jesse Poore (1770-1860) married his wife 2nd wife Mary Morris in Sullivan County, TN. Edward Lucius Poer married Mary's sister Sarah Morris in Sullivan County, TN. They came from a Quaker family in North Carolina. Their father Reuben Morris and grandfather Thomas Hatton Morris lived near Jeremiah and Edward Poer jr.

Some of Jesse's children ended up moving to Indiana and Illinois.

Jesse was also good friends with as well as a business acquaintance with Elijah Embree who he signed land deeds for in Tennessee as well as helped with his Iron Works. Read more about Jesse's dealings with the Embree's in Being Poore in America VOL. 2 (FREE)

Elijah Embree's father was a Quaker minister. Elijah's brother Elihu Embree published the first newspaper in the U.S. that was solely focused on abolishing slavery.
April 4, 1789, Elihu Elijah Embray (Embree) is listed along with his father Thomas Embray (Embree) in the New Garden Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, NC. Event Type: Admittance

Source:

In Nov. 1789 Elijah Embree is listed along with his father Thomas Embree as living in Surry, North Carolina. This is listed in the Quaker records for Westfield Monthly Meeting.

Source:

Thomas Embree (Elijah Embree's father) is listed as being a founding member of the New Hope Monthly Meeting in Greene County, Tennessee. This meeting started in 1794/95.

Thomas Embree's family was originally part of the Cane Creek Snow Camp Meeting, Almance County, North Carolina. Just southeast of Greensboro. NC.

When New Hope was founded, the Lost Creek Friends were also included in their membership. It was founded by direction of Westfield Monthly Meeting (Tom’s Creek) in Surry County, North Carolina.

Beginning in 1804 some of the members migrated to Ohio and Indiana.

New Garden Monthly Meeting

Chester County, Pennsylvania: In the 1750s about 40 families moved to Guilford, NC and set up the New Garden Meeting there.

Early meetings of New Garden Monthly Meeting in Chester County, Pennsylvania were held John Miller's home starting in 1713. Early trustees included Simon Hadley, James Starr, Thomas Jackson, and Michael Lightfoot. In 1715, the members-built log meeting house.
In 1743 a red brick addition was added to the south end of the New Garden Friends Meetinghouse.

During the 1750's about forty families from New Garden moved to Guilford County, North Carolina and took the New Garden name with them.

Powers Family Connection to Jesse Poore

Poore, Poore, Poer, Poe, Powers, Pore, Poor etc. were used interchangeably on various records. One person could be listed as Poore in one census, then 10 years later be listed as Poer on another census. There are documents where people are even listed as Poor and Powers in the same document. Accents and writing/spelling skills contributed to alternate spellings over time.

David Powers 1737-1788 of Grayson, Virginia was the Father of George, Peter and Valentine Powers mentioned in  EASTWIND WEST WIND THE LEGACY OF JOHN POORE [1635] BY JAMES H. CREIGHTON.

In his book, he mentioned they could in fact be Poore's and now we know they were mixed into the same family as the Jeremiah Poor (1754-1850) line that Jesse Poore 1770-1860 is connected to through Y-DNA.

George Powers 1761-1819 (Son of David Powers 1737-1788)

Jesse Poore descendant Don Poore (DNA Source) has a 26.9 cM (3 segments) match, and his daughter Donna Poore (DNA Source) has a 13.3 cM (1 segment) match with Seth Ryan Williams (My Heritage) who is a direct descendant of George Powers 1761-1819 and His father David Powers 1737-1788.

DNA matches with Seth Ryan Williams (My Heritage):
Descendant of George Powers 1761-1819 and his father David Powers 1737-1788

* Don Poore (DNA Source) - 26.9 cM (3 segments)
* Donna Poore (DNA Source) - 13.3 cM (1 segment)

Seth Ryan Williams (My Heritage) also shares a DNA match with Alma Cooke who is a direct descendant of Edward Poer 1735-1834 and his son Jeremiah Poer 1756-1850

DNA matches with Alma Cooke:
Descendant of Edward Poer 1735-1834 and his father Jeremiah Poer 1756-1850

* Don Poore (DNA Source) – 60.2 cM (5 segments)
* Donna Poore (DNA Source) – 55.1 cM (5 segment)
* Ross Poore (DNA Source) – 32.9 cM (3 segment)

Because of the Don Poore (DNA Source) and Donna Poore (DNA Source) match to Seth Ryan Williams (My Heritage) and his shared match to Alma Cooke who Don Poore (DNA Source), Donna Poore (DNA Source) and Ross Poore (DNA Source) match with, we know that the David Powers 1737-1788 line is directly related to the Jeremiah Poor 1754-1850 Line.

Michael Powers Connection to David D. Powers

In the 1850 census in Claiborne County, TN, Michael Powers is listed as a stone cutter being born in Virginia and was 29 years old.

Research shows that Michael Powers was born in 1821 in Russell County, Virginia to George Powers Jr. and Anna Lozier Powers.

Michael’s father George Powers Jr. was also born in Russell County, VA and died in Claiborne County, TN in 1841.

George Power Jr’s father, George W Powers Sr. was born in Grason County, VA in 1761 and died in Russell County, VA in 1819. He was married to Ernestina Elizabeth.

George W Power Senior’s father is believed to be David D. Powers and was born in Wythe, Grayson, VA around 1737 and died after 1783 in Russell, VA

David D. Powers’ grandson, George Powers Jr. lived in Claiborne County, TN near Jesse Poore. George lived in dwelling 267 with his wife Anna Lozier Powers and Jesse lived in dwelling 282 while the son of George Powers Jr., Michael Powers lived in dwelling 273.
I don’t believe Jesse Poore’s close proximity to these Powers family members is a coincidence.

Y-DNA Research

BIG Y-DNA RESEARCH

INTRODUCTION

Originally published June 2023

Jesse Poore
B:1770 Sullivan, North Carolina / Tennessee
D:1860 Tazewell, Claiborne, Tennessee

The first round of DNA research information can be found at: PooreFamilyHistory.com

Unlike most other DNA, which is a mix of both parents' genetic material, Y-DNA is passed directly from father to son without significant changes over generations.

HIGH LEVEL OVERVIEW

There have been multiple family trees that have listed Jesse Poore 1770-1860 as the son of Joseph Poore 1737-1795 and Margaret Boynton Bailey 1738-1818 of Essex, Massachusetts. While they did have a son named Jesse born around the same time, this isn’t the same Jesse that was born in North Carolina and died in Tennessee. We haven’t found any evidence to back up this claim.

We have had a few low-level DNA matches that tie into the Poore line from Massachusetts. He is distantly related but our DNA testing with Jesse Poore’s direct descendants show much stronger ties to another family that was in much closer proximity.

One more thing to keep in mind when looking at this information, the surname names Poore, Poor, Poer, Poher, Powers, Power and other variations are related and often interchangeable. The different accents and education levels of those recording the names on documents led to various spellings through the centuries.

Based on the Big Y-DNA evidence below as well as the autosomal DNA evidence in our first report, we still believe two options are possible:

Option 1:
Jeremiah Poer 1754-1850 is the father of Jesse Poore 1770-1860.

Option 2:
James Poer 1755-1811 (Jeremiah’s brother), Edward Poer 1735-1834 (Father of Jeremiah, James) or an unknown brother (David Poore) is the father of Jesse Poore 1770-1860.

THE DNA EVIDENCE
The Y-DNA testing was done through FamilyTreeDNA.com

Big Y-700 Tests

Jesse Poore's (1770-1860) family line descends from haplogroup I-Y43930 / FT202786
Jeremiah Poer's (1754-1850) family line also descends from haplogroup I-Y43930 / FT202786

* Albert G. Poore, Lee Poore and Keith Dwayne Wilcox are descendants through Jesse Poore's first marriage.

* Keven Poore is a descendant of Jeremiah Poer.

The DNA for Albert G. Poore and Lee Poore mutated slightly and created a new branch named

I-FT176187. They are listed in one column together.

Keith Dwayne Wilcox and Keven Poore stayed with the same I-Y43930 branch and they are listed in one column together.

CONCLUSION

This theory seems very possible based on the strong evidence of how closely (location) these families were very close to one another in different counties over a decade and probably longer.

Option 2:
James Poer 1755-1811 (Jeremiah’s brother), Edward Poer 1735-1834 (Father of Jeremiah, James) or an unknown brother is the father of Jesse Poore 1770-1860.

In this case, David Poor (Wife: Priscilla Poor) would be the unknown brother.

Naming conventions for Jesse’s children line up with this theory, David, Priscilla and Jesse are listed in Robert Hester’s probate and some of the others listed in Robert’s probate were listed in a property dispute that Jesse Poore was listed in in 1805.

More Information About Jeremiah Poor

Because of the large Irish immigration (The "Nottingham Colony" or Settlement) into Guilford County, North Carolina in the early 1750s it would make sense that Edward Poer 1735-1834 made his way there as well.

We have seen information in various family trees that show Edward as being born in England. There are unanswered questions about Edward Poer’s travels to the United States from England and if he even lived there in the first place. We haven’t seen any solid records that confirm any location, marriage, or births in England. There is a baptism record for an Edward Poor on August 27, 1734, in Dublin, Ireland with the father listed as Will. Poor and the mother as Catherine. There are early land records for an Edward Poer and Edward Powers in North Carolina that could possibly be him or an even earlier relative.

Three of his sons (listed below) were reported to have been born in England then travelled to North Carolina around 1790 where they settled down although we don’t believe they were born in England. We haven’t found any records for any of their births and for what it’s worth, the 1850 census for Guilford, North Carolina lists Edward’s son Jeremiah Poor (1754-1850) as being around 96 years of age, a pauper and having been born in Guilford, North Carolina.

Edward Lucius Poer (1794-1880), the son of Jeremiah Poor (1754-1850) was living in Indiana with his son Anderson Poor in 1880. Since Edward Lucius Poer lived in the same home as his son he was included in the 1880 census in Essex and Porter, Porter, Indiana. It lists his father (Jeremiah 1754-1850) and mother (Elizabeth Hester 1773-1836) as being born in North Carolina.

In the 1900 census in York, Missouri, Chauncey Poer, son of Edward Poer Jr. (1762-1827) listed his mother's (Sarah Thompson 1776–1870) birthplace as Ireland and his father's as Unknown.

A story posted by Lynda White on Ancestry.com in 2013 recounts the family history from Jesse Ermin Poer (1834-1899) who is the great, great, great grandson of Jeremiah Poer (1754-1850). It says, “Edward and Rebecca (Thompson) Poer emigrated with son Jeremiah to North Carolina about 1760.”

Quick recap:

* Jeremiah Poer (1754-1850) was listed as being born in North Carolina in the 1850 census.

* Edward Lucius Poor (1794-1880) listed his mother and father (Jeremiah Poer, Elizabeth Hester) as being born in North Carolina in the 1880 census.

* In the 1900 census in York, Missouri, Chauncey Poer, son of Edward Poer Jr. (1762-1827) listed his mother's (Sarah Thompson 1776–1870) birthplace as Ireland and his father's as Unknown.

* Ancestry Story: “Edward and Rebecca (Thompson) Poer emigrated with son Jeremiah to North Carolina about 1760.”

Either way, Jesse Poore 1770-1860 is blood related to Jeremiah Poer and Edward Poer Senior’s line. As with option 2 above, Edward Poer 1735-1834 or an unknown brother was in the United States with his nephews (Jeremiah Poer, Edward Poer Jr., James Poer). We have already DNA verified one brother/cousin (David B. Poer 1744-1808) to Edward Poer 1735-1834 in the first DNA research updated listed at PooreFamilyHIstory.com. There are bound to be more out there that we may never know.
