Overview:
Based on information we have researched; Jesse Poore’s parents could have been David Poor (Possible brother to Jeremiah Poer & Edward Poer Jr.) and Priscilla Poor who lived in North Carolina. Jesse Poore could have married Ann Hester (Daughter of Robert Hester, sister in-law of Jeremiah Poer).
Naming conventions for Jesse’s children help show this connection along with the census, probate, court information below.
We have already proven the direct Y-DNA (Male line) connection from Jesse Poore’s line to Jeremiah Poer’s (1754-1850) line in Guilford County, North Carolina.

Jesse Poore:
Jesse Poore would have been 20 years old in 1790, old enough to be living on his own at the time or possibly living with Robert Hester’s family if he married Ann Hester (1765)
Names of Jesse’s children and how they connect to this theory:
Let’s assume Jesse Poore (1770-1860) married Ann Hester (1765).
Ann Hester’s parents:Robert Hester (1730s-1802)Elizabeth Nancy Norman (1730s-1767)
Let’s assume Jesse Poore’s (1770-1860) parents are those listed below.
Jesse Poore’s parents:David PoorPriscilla Poor
Naming conventions: Many Scotts families of the times followed the custom of naming their children after the grandparents in the following manner.
Names of Jesse’s first children:
First born son named for the paternal grandfather.David (Grandfather’s name is David Poor)Second son named for the maternal grandfather.Robert (Grandfather’s name is Robert Hester)Third son named for the father.William Robert Poore (Father’s name is Jesse Poore. William or Robert could be his first name?)First born daughter for the paternal grandmother.Priscilla (Grandmother’s name is Priscilla Poor)Priscilla is shown to be Jesse’s first daughter using the information found here: https://poorefamilyhistory.blogspot.com/2024/03/priscilla-poor-1800-after-1870-daughter.htmlSecond daughter for the maternal grandmother.Nancy Ann Poor (Grandmother’s name is Elizabeth Nancy Norman)
Four out of the five naming conventions in this case correctly match the family members listed. The only one that didn’t match exactly was for Jesse’s third son which could be due to Jesse using a middle name.
There are listings showing Ann Hester’s death happening in 1802, but nothing documented with records that we have seen.
(1800 Census) David Poore, Robert Hester:
In 1790, David Poore, Jeremiah Poore and Robert Hester lived in Guilford County, NC. In 1800, Jeremiah Poore was still in Guilford County, NC and Robert and David were in Stokes County, NC.
Robert Hester is listed one page after David Poor in the 1800 census in Stokes County. The must have lived close to one another.
He is also listed directly above John Hix (Hicks). John Hicks was listed as a bordering property owner to Jesse Poore, Samuel Kerby and William Moreland in an 1805 Land Dispute (Below).

Jesse Poore’s 1805 Land Dispute Connection to Robert Hester
In 1805 Jesse Poore was listed as a bordering property owner in a land dispute in Surry County, North Carolina between Samuel Kerby and William Moreland. John Hicks is also listed among the bordering property owners in the 1805 and is also listed in the Probate for Robert Hester. The regional court was located in Surry County for the surrounding counties.
Samuel Kerby (Listed in Robert Hester's Probate)William Moreland is more than likely the father of Joseph Moreland (Listed in Robert Hester’s probate)1800 census: Joseph Moreland & William Moreland are listed.John Hicks1830 Stokes County, NC CensusJohn W. Hicks is two names below David Powers. Is this the same John Hicks from the 1805 land dispute that Jesse Poore is mentioned in? Same David mentioned in Robert Hester’s probate and the 1790 census for Guilford County?
OF NOTE: Jesse Poore's daughter Elizabeth Jean Poore married Robert Hicks in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Possibly related to John Hicks.
David Poor’s (Jesse’s father?) 1805 Surry County Court Connection to Jesse Poore:
Jesse Poore’s land location in North Carolina.
May 14th 1805 Court RecordSurry County, North CarolinaDavid PoorLitigant"Joseph Moreland one of the Lenities (?) For the appearance of David Poor came into court and surrendered the said Poor who is ordered into the sheriff's custody."Joseph Moreland (mentioned in Robert Hester's probate) is more than likely the son of William Moreland who was listed in the land dispute between himself (William Moreland) and Samuel Kerby. This is the same land dispute that lists Jesse Poore as a bordering property owner in 1805 in Surry County.
May 16th 1805 Court RecordSurry County, North CarolinaThe State vs David Poore (Not Tried)"Joseph Moreland a witness for the state proves 44 miles & 3 days.""John H Pryor a witness for the state proves 44 miles & 3 days."
Conclusion:
This theory seems very possible based on the strong evidence of how closely (location) these families were to one another in different counties over a decade and probably longer. Jeremiah Poer married Elizabeth Hester (Robert Hester’s daughter, sister of Ann Hester) in 1790 in Guilford County, North Carolina.
With the extremely high Y-DNA match to the Jeremiah Poer 1754-1850 line, we have always believed these two options were possible.
Option 1:Jeremiah Poer 1754-1850 is the father of Jesse Poore 1770-1860.Option 2:James Poer 1755-1811 (Jeremiah’s brother), Edward Poer 1735-1834 (Father of Jeremiah, James) or an unknown brother is the father of Jesse Poore 1770-1860.
In this case, David Poor (Wife: Priscilla Poor) would be the unknown brother.
Naming conventions for Jesse’s children line up with this theory, David, Priscilla and Jesse are listed in Robert Hester’s probate and some of the others listed in Robert’s probate were listed in a property dispute that Jesse Poore was listed in in 1805.
